Every community has a story.

Ours begins with the people of Eastmoor.

In 1996, Eastmoor Community Project Limited was created with a shared vision: to build a place where people could come together, support one another, and strengthen the community they call home. What started from humble beginnings—working out of an empty shop and an old vicarage—quickly became something much greater, driven by the passion, resilience, and spirit of local residents who believed in the power of community.

Eastmoor has always been a vibrant and diverse neighbourhood, rich in cultures, traditions, and experiences. From the very beginning, our mission has been to celebrate that diversity while creating a space where everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued. The heart of our work has always been about bringing people together, building friendships, and creating opportunities that help individuals and families thrive.

In 2001, the local Anglican church gave its building and land, St Swithun’s Church, to facilitate the building of a new community centre. The Centre was built on this site with grant support and help from the Wakefield District Council. Construction began on replacing the former church hall that had long served the area. But this was never just about bricks and mortar. The centre was shaped by the voices of the community itself. Local residents shared their ideas, hopes, and aspirations, helping to design a facility that truly reflected the needs of the people it was built to serve. The St Swithun’s Community Centre was the outcome of this collaboration.

From that moment on, St Swithun’s Community Centre became much more than a building—it became the beating heart of the Eastmoor Estate. A place where people gather, where support is offered, where new skills are learned, and where friendships are formed.

Over the years, we have worked tirelessly to secure funding, build partnerships, and expand the services and activities available within the centre. In June 2014, we proudly became a registered charity (No. 1157557), strengthening our ability to support the community and continue the work that began nearly three decades ago.

Today, our heritage is still being written. Every event held, every partnership formed, and every person who walks through our doors becomes part of the continuing story of St Swithun’s Community Centre—a story rooted in community, compassion, and a shared commitment to a stronger future for Eastmoor.
